Feature Story

Strategic Planning for Long-Term Sustainability

This spring, HNT finalized comprehensive strategic planning initiatives for both the Indigenous Roots & Reparation Foundation (IRRF) and Chelan Douglas County Volunteer Attorney Services (CDCVAS).

For both organizations, our work included:

  • Facilitating board and leadership planning sessions
  • Developing long-term strategic priorities and measurable goals
  • Creating implementation matrices and committee work plans
  • Building accountability systems to monitor progress over time

These strategic plans provide each organization with a clear roadmap for decision-making, resource development, and organizational growth. By aligning mission, programs, governance, and financial sustainability, these organizations are better positioned to increase their impact and serve their communities more effectively.

Governance

Strengthening Nonprofit Policies and Governance

Another area of focus for HNT over the past several months has been helping nonprofit organizations strengthen their internal policies and governance practices. While we maintain client confidentiality, our team has worked with several organizations to create, review, and update policies that support legal compliance, operational efficiency, and nonprofit best practices.

Recent policy projects have included:

  • Financial Policies and Procedures
  • Conflict of Interest Policies and Disclosure Forms
  • Social Media Policies
  • Emergency and Active Threat Procedures
  • Technology and Cybersecurity Policies
  • Gift Acceptance and Planned Giving Policies
  • Payroll and Reimbursement Policies
  • Board Governance Policies
  • Succession and Leadership Transition Plans
  • Employee Handbook Reviews and Updates

Strong policies provide organizations with clear expectations, reduce organizational risk, and create systems that support sustainability and leadership continuity.

Fund Development

Building Sustainable Individual Giving Programs

HNT has also been working alongside both IRRF and CDCVAS to strengthen their fundraising capacity through the development of Individual Giving Programs.

This work includes:

  • Creating donor engagement strategies
  • Developing donor stewardship systems
  • Building annual giving structures and donor communications
  • Designing donor recognition opportunities
  • Establishing systems that support long-term fundraising growth

Individual giving programs help nonprofits diversify revenue streams and create stronger relationships with community supporters, ultimately reducing dependence on grants alone and increasing financial resilience.

New Initiative

Planned & Legacy Giving at CDCVAS

One of our newest initiatives has been helping CDCVAS establish its first Planned and Legacy Giving Program.

This project includes:

  • Creating the Justice Legacy Society framework
  • Developing legacy giving marketing materials and donor resources
  • Designing donor intent forms and educational materials
  • Building website recommendations and long-term donor engagement strategies

Planned giving programs allow supporters to leave a lasting legacy while helping organizations build future financial stability. For CDCVAS, this initiative creates an opportunity to secure long-term resources that will support access to civil legal services for generations to come.

Ongoing Work

Governance and Organizational Capacity Building

In addition to these major initiatives, HNT continues to provide ongoing support in:

  • Board development and recruitment
  • Governance best practices and policy development
  • Executive coaching and leadership support
  • Committee facilitation and implementation stewardship
  • Organizational assessments and succession planning
  • Fund development strategy and systems building

Community

Learning Through Community: IRRF Rising Roots Camp

In April, members of the HNT team — Logan, Haley, Jenny, and Cesar — had the privilege of supporting and attending Indigenous Roots and Reparation Foundation's Rising Roots Camp. We are deeply grateful to have been welcomed into this space on the traditional homelands of the Wenatchi people and for the opportunity to learn more about Indigenous culture, community, and the important work being led to preserve and share these traditions.

Experiences like these remind us that nonprofit consulting is about more than systems and strategy; it's about relationships, listening, and honoring the communities we serve.

Event Support

Supporting Signature Events and Fundraising Efforts

While event planning and coordination is not a service we provide frequently, it is one of the ways HNT can support nonprofit organizations when needed. We understand that signature events and fundraising activities often require significant staff time and organizational capacity.

HNT can assist organizations by:

  • Providing event planning and project management support
  • Coordinating logistics and timelines
  • Supporting volunteer and committee stewardship
  • Assisting with sponsorship development and donor engagement
  • Helping organizations execute successful fundraising and community events

By stepping in as a temporary extension of staff capacity, we help organizations stay focused on their mission while delivering meaningful and impactful events for their communities.

Looking Ahead

Upcoming Projects

Looking ahead, HNT is excited to continue supporting nonprofits through:

  • Strategic plan implementation and accountability systems
  • Board onboarding and leadership development programs
  • Planned giving expansion and donor engagement initiatives
  • Organizational assessments and governance restructuring
  • Fundraising capacity building and sustainability planning
  • Executive leadership coaching and transition support

Every project we undertake is rooted in one goal: helping nonprofits build the systems, leadership, and sustainability needed to thrive and maximize their impact in our communities.
